What is strawberry milk tea?

Strawberry milk tea is also known as strawberry boba tea or bubble tea: a sweet and creamy strawberry-flavored milk served over chewy tapioca pearls. Although it’s often flavored with a strawberry syrup, juice, or powder, this homemade strawberry bubble tea recipe uses fresh strawberries. And, despite the name, strawberry milk tea often doesn’t contain any tea at all.

How do you make strawberry bubble tea?

To make strawberry bubble tea at home, all you need to do is blend up your milk tea, cook tapioca pearls, and serve them together in cup! Of course, it’s best to serve with a boba straw. Although some folks choose to make boba pearls at home, I prefer to use premade black tapioca pearls for convenience. They only need a few minutes to boil, and the whole process takes 15 minutes or less.

What does strawberry boba tea taste like?

Strawberry boba tea tastes sweet and fruity like strawberries, with a cool, creamy texture from the milk and fun bursts of chewy boba in every sip. At a boba shop, you might enjoy pink boba tea flavored with a syrup or powder, which can have a more concentrated, candy-like flavor. In this strawberry milk tea recipe, the flavor is more natural—with the tangy-sweetness of real strawberries!

What is strawberry milk tea made of?

This strawberry milk tea boba is made of fresh strawberries, sugar (optional), milk of choice, and tapioca pearls. It’s seriously one of the simplest bubble tea recipes you can make! I prefer to macerate my strawberries in sugar for a bit for the best flavor, but this is optional. You control the sugar content, and you can use nondairy milk for a dairy free or vegan bubble tea.

Strawberry Boba Tea Ingredients

  • Strawberries. Instead of a sugary, artificially flavored syrup, this strawberry milk tea recipe gets its flavor from fresh strawberries! I recommend using fresh strawberries rather than frozen for the best texture and taste.
  • Sugar. A little sugar goes a long way to enhance the flavor of strawberries! Personally, I recommend coating sliced strawberries with sugar and letting them macerate for 30 minutes to get the sweetest, most satisfying flavor. Of course, you can skip the macerating and just add sugar into the blender. If you don’t want to use sugar, feel free to use your choice of sweetener, or omit the sweetener altogether for a tangier drink.
  • Milk of Choice. Customize your strawberry bubble tea with whatever milk you prefer—dairy or nondairy. I used almond milk in this recipe and it tasted great!
  • Tapioca Pearls. Premade black tapioca pearls make homemade boba tea super convenient. You can find other types of boba pearls—like clear boba, or even strawberry boba pearls—but I like the black boba because they’re versatile, subtly sweet, and easy to work with.
  • Boba Cup & Straw. Treat yourself to the authentic boba tea experience by serving it in a boba cup with a straw! Disposable boba cups are one option, or grab a set of glass boba cups with reusable boba straws.

Does strawberry boba tea have caffeine?

No, this strawberry boba tea doesn’t have caffeine because it doesn’t have any tea in it. However, you can find strawberry milk tea that has tea in it in some boba shops, or you can add tea yourself! If you want a strawberry bubble tea with caffeine or some tea flavor in it, simply boil the milk first, steep a black or green tea bag, and then chill before blending with strawberries.

How to Make Strawberry Boba Tea

  • As an optional first step, macerate strawberries for about 30 minutes. Just slice strawberries, add to a bowl, and coat with sugar. This will enhance their fruity flavor and sweetness before going into your boba milk tea!
  • Make strawberry milk tea in a blender with milk of choice and macerated strawberries (or strawberries + sweetener). Blend until smooth, then strain through a fine mesh strainer for the smoothest texture.
  • Then, cook boba tapioca pearls according to package directions. (I boil mine for 3-5 minutes.)
  • Finally, assemble drinks! Add cooked boba pearls into each boba cup, pour in strawberry milk tea, and serve with a boba straw.
